When we moved into our home just over 6 years ago, curb appeal was NOT something that got us to buy! The yard was dead and there was a lone rose bush in our side bed and a dead evergreen under the front window. We planted a few things, but nothing that we loved. We replaced edging, but also didn't love it. Once we started watering we noticed something coming up. First I thought it was some sort of flower, then we began to think it was corn, after a lot of growth we realized that it was bamboo. So, we decided to embrace the bamboo. It required a lot of cutting back and digging out as it grew and spread and grew some more.
Finally, a few weeks ago, we decided to get rid of the bamboo. It had done it's time and we were ready to try something else. So N8 started digging~
Me and the kids started bagging up the bamboo and all of it roots (it's more like a large bulb system!)~
After it was cleared we talked about what we wanted and finally decided on a "dry stream" look with plants on either side. Some of the plants are edibles and some or purely decorative. While N8 had everything dug up he found our local resource for free manure. There is a local burro rescue with loads of free manure. He took over 5 gallon buckets and filled them up. He also replaced all of the poly pipe so and each plant gets it's own little watering bubbler!
N8 did a fabulous job. Now we get to wait and see if it all continues to grow! Neither of us are known for having a green thumb, but we're making our best effort. We are getting some growth in our garden. Here's Emma with our first radish:
We must have some munchers in the garden since there were some bug holes on one side, but we cut that off and N8 and I each got a bite. I haven't convinced the kids that they like radishes yet!!

What a fabulous idea for your garden! IT looks absolutely lovely. (My Nate might die if he heard you took out bamboo. He LOVES bamboo and wants it in his yard.)
You guys did a great job! And radishes are gross!
I loved the bamboo and am sad it is gone, but the new bed looks great!
